Test system

The computer we tested In Win Commander 750W with, is the best available to us, being at the same time one of the most powerful and not so mainstream gaming machines.

  • Motherboard: ASUS M4AT79 Deluxe
  • Processor: AMD Phenom II 955 Black Edition
  • Video cards: 2 x HD 4890 DDR5 1GB Sapphire
  • Memory: 2 x 2GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair
  • hard drive 1: Western Digital Velocity Raptor 10 000 RPM 150GB
  • Hard drive 2: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 7200RPM 300GB
  • Optical drive: Optical ASUS DVD+/-RW 20x
  • Cooling: 4 case fans

PSU's tested and compared
  • In Win Commander 750W
  • Hipro 580W
  • Seventeam ST-750P-AF
  • Cooler Master Real Power 1000W
  • Raptoxx Exxtreme Series RT-EBAD1200 1200W

Testing methodology

Tests for PSU voltages in idle and under load modes were made with the above mentioned configuration. Later we decided to run tests for energy efficiency with few more PSU's, in which test we would measure the amount of power consumed from the system while performing the exactly same operations with the exactly same hardware but with different PSU. That would show with great preciseness the difference in effectiveness of the "80+" models that were in the ModReactor lab.

For the tests we used a good multimeter. We measured the power consumed with a plain home Power Meter, that can be obtained anywhere for about 12$ - 20$ and has accuracy of +/- 1W, which is quite acceptable

The voltages held by In Win Commander 750W were a pleasant surprise indeed. Both its +12V and +5V lines were exceptionally close to the ideal along with the ones of the much more expensive and powerful Raptoxx Exxtreme Series RT-EBAD1200 1200W, which for the time being is the very best PSU we've ever tested. Under load voltages were very stable, mostly those of the 5V line. The only slightly worrying thing is the 3.3V line, not that it's not stable but its the lowest one of all the tested PSU's.

Now let's see how much power does In Win Commander 750W consume

Only Cooler Master Real Power 1000W Е is better, but bear in mind it is a higher class of PSU. Under load In Win Commander 750W is absolutely equal in performance to its bigger brothers. As for expanding - as you can see though the test rig is quite serious, reaching the maximum of 750W is a long way away. You can safely use In Win Commander 750W in even more powerful 3 video card systems.

Other

In Win Commander 750W has 4 12V lines, which is more or less standard with PSU's of similar power and price range. Surely, we cannot expect that a 100$ PSU will be able to supply its full power on a single 12V line.

As for additional peripherals, there is the necessary and more or less mandatory minimum – additional connectors for peripherals are eight 4 pin molex connectors and 8 SATA, though unfortunately PCI-E connectors are only 4. That might be dictated by the fact that the PSU rating is 750W and the assumption that it will be used with no more than two high performance cards, regardless of its potential to go further. Yes, you could always use an adapter, still... Also if you power a card with two connectors you do have to use two cables, but at least you'll be powering it from two separate 12V lines.
